Honda NSX project goes the way of the F1 team

according to this article from paultan.org says that Shortly after announcing Honda’s withdrawal from Formula One, Honda’s Takeo Fukui has announced that the new Honda NSX project has been scrapped, though some are speculating that it’s actually just frozen for the time being. Apparently the move is part of efforts to cut costs in the increasingly challenging automaker environment.

The Honda NSX would have been a supercar with a screaming V10 mounted up front, a departure from the original NSX’s V6-powered mid-mounted layout. In fact, there have already been prototypes sighted on test in places like the Nurburgring, but I guess it’s just not meant to be, for now at least. Instead, expect any dedicated sports car offerings coming out of Honda to be small, light and come with a fuel cell or hybrid engine, pretty much like the Honda CR-Z Concept, in line with the green image that Honda is working hard to project now.

SONY PSP 2 coming soon

he PSP has had a good run, but Sony is ready to move onto the next generation according to EuroGamer. The PSP will receive one more refresh with the PSP-4000 in late ‘09. It’s PSP2 after that. Details are not available about either the updated PSP or the successor as of yet. The last update of the PSP involved an updated screen (which is hated by some) and a couple of new buttons. The final update will probably have similar, minor bumps.

HOTs: Another XBOX 360 Crisis Issue

Wikipedia’d

A recently filed lawsuit (which is seeking class action status) claims that Microsoft knew all about the disc scratching problem that affects its Xbox 360 game discs. As such, Microsoft should be required to pay a boatload of money to people whose game discs have been damaged.

As some of you may know, the Xbox 360 has a tendency to scratch game discs that are in motion (that is, spinning inside the console because you’re playing a game) when the console itself is moved. (Wikipedia has a lot more info on the technical side of things.) Common sense would suggest that people merely not move their Xbox 360 while its in use, but there are instances when this can’t be helped. (Someone walking right by the console can be enough for a disc to become scratched.) (That’s a lot of parenthetical sentences.)

Final Fantasy 13 & versus 13 Strike back~

The Cloud Message mag isn't even out on Japanese store shelves yet, and the internet is already blazing with sneaking peeks on the Fabula Nova Crystallis coverage within its pages. All three announced titles in the series: Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII (PSP) are all featured in the mag and there's juicy new info on each one.

For the two PS3 games, the new reveal on Versus XIII is a pretty big one. It's the first time anyone has seen gameplay images of the game. The images themselves are tiny (pictured above), but it is clearly seen (in the larger version) that numerous pictures show off in-game scenes as hinted by the visible HUD and map. As for the Main FFXIII title, the images don't reveal as much. It's interesting to note that a character design from the title's drawing board has been semi-blurred. It is possible that this design may be a new playable character, though that is not certain. If any of this has you interested, check out the larger sized images here and see the fine details.

Believe it or Not , Back-Button to the Future

A new tool makes it easier to see the Web changing over time.

Credit to Erica Naone

Huge quantities of information are never more than a few clicks away on the Web, but it's not always easy to see what things were like yesterday. News stories and blog posts might be archived, but other information often gets lost. For instance, while it's trivial to find a book's sales ranking on Amazon today, it's less simple to see what it was last week. And for anyone curious about how news evolves, it might not be obvious how a story's prominence has changed--did it get top billing on news sites the day it broke, or was it buried at the bottom of the page? A new tool called Zoetrope is designed to help track such information by letting users browse backward through time.

Other projects, such as the Internet Archive, already preserve historical versions of websites. But Mira Dontcheva, a research scientist in the Advanced Technologies Lab at Adobe Systems, where Zoetrope was developed, says the new tool makes it much easier to browse through this kind of data. "Having access to temporal information can help us come up with more compelling stories of what's going on around us," she says.

A user can peer back in time through Zoetrope in several ways. Simply pulling a scrollbar at the bottom of the browser winds a Web page back to show what it looked like hours, days, or months ago. Or, if the user is interested in one specific piece of information, like the price of a certain product, he or she can draw a "lens" over that area of the page to see how it changes.

An experienced user can perform even more-advanced analysis. For example, configured correctly, Zoetrope will recognize a price as it goes up or down and will show the results as a graph. It's also possible to draw lenses on different websites and sync them in order to carry out a historical comparison. For example, a user could use one lens to track weather information and another lens to track movie-attendance figures. Looking at how both lenses change over time might reveal a correlation between bad weather and high movie turnout. Zoetrope can also track some pieces of data as they move about a page over time.

An anti-radiation sticker for phones!

"Supposedly, their little dime-sized sticker will emit “a quantum physical information wave” to counter your phone’s lethal radiation. The firm responsible hasn’t released any other information about the product as of yet, or else it’s in a language I can’t read. Whatever, it’s all science, am I right?

So if you believe that this product may do you some good, and you live in Belgium, you can pick up the “E-Waves Phone Chip” today for 40 Euros, or about $50"

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete
Kingdom Hearts 358 / 2 Days
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep

Flying Ultraman: Another cool Nippon-exlusive toy

Tokyo-based toy maker Wiz today unveiled a remote-controlled mini Ultraman figure [JP, PDF] that is able to fly, just like the original in the legendary super hero series. The so-called Charabot Ultraman will hit Japanese stores at the end of January (price: $35), probably without ever making it outside the country.

Wiz says it wants to sell the toy mainly to male adults in their 30s and 40s. The figure is designed like the first-generation Ultraman who became popular in the 1960s. The toy weighs 13 grams and stands 150mm tall.

New Rock Band 2 Instrument Coming (??)

Could it be the flugelhorn?

Official XBOX Magazine found that the orange input on the Rock Band 2 drum set is not an input for a second kick pedal as was previously thought. Harmonix have yet to release information about the functionality of the input but state that the functionality, and details for double-kick will be revealed.

This could be the final unveiling of the rumored and much anticipated keyboard or just another drum set accessory.

Next Generation Robot :Mamoru kun"the Little Protector"

The Information and Robot Technology Research Initiative, a research body of the prestigious University of Tokyo, has developed a small desktop robot that assists elderly people in managing daily tasks. The robot was developed in cooperation with various Japanese companies such as Toyota and Fujitsu.

Mamoru-Kun (”Little Protector”) is a robot that is able to tell his owner where an object he or she lost or misplaced within a certain area is located. He can do it verbally or by pointing at the object. Alternatively, Mamoru-Kun is even kind enough to tell his bigger robot buddy get the object for his owner. It’s also possible to let him warn people to take their medicine in time.

At Guangzhou 2008 "Li Nian Roadster concept "

This drop top roadster was exhibited by Guangzhou Honda at the 2008 Guangzhou Motor Show, perhaps their idea of a next generation Honda S2000. Apparently it’s a pure design exercise for the time being, with no immediate plans to put such a vehicle into production under the company’s own Li Nian home-grown brand. There’s only one other Li Nian concept car so far, a compact crossover SUV unveiled in April this year. That one’s going to make it into production, set for a 2010 debut.

iPhone now boots Linux, soon to boot Android?

Mobility
By Christian Zibreg
Monday, December 01, 2008 14:41

Chicago (IL) – A group of developers called The Dev Team unveiled the perhaps most significant iPhone modification so far by porting basic parts of Linux to the iPhone and iPod touch. The bare-bone Linux 2.6 kernel port shows only the command line prompt, but higher-level parts of the operating system, such as graphics and networking, are also in the works. As exciting as it sounds, running Linux on the iPhone is most likely only a basic step towards a far more ambitious goal - running Android on the iPhone.

The Dev Team originally became famous with its iPhone jailbreaking and unlocking tools that enable users to install any iPhone application on their handset and use the phone with any GSM network. Although the developers are still improving these tools, it has been an open secret that they have been working on other projects as well. Last week, the team surprised users with a successful Linux boot on the iPhone. The achievement is considered a milestone, if not groundbreaking, since this is the first time that the iPhone is reported to run an alternative operating system.

"I am pleased to announce that the Linux 2.6 kernel has been ported to Apple's iPhone platform, with support for the first and second generation iPhones as well as the first generation iPod touch," the official announcement states. The developers claim that they have a rough first draft of the Linux port so it is missing many higher-level drivers. However, key components required for basic functionality and command line functionality have been ported, including basic graphics support and a serial and serial-over-USB driver. They now focus on porting other libraries and drivers as well to let Linux run a graphical user interface and use iPhone's hardware capabilities, including the accelerometer, touchscreen, sound, NAND flash memory and networking.

Installing Linux on an iPhone or iPod touch currently involves a series of steps the developers do not recommend to those without extensive knowledge. The process basically comes down backing up the content of the device, installing the component called OpeniBoot and a basic Linux 2.6 kernel iPhone port. The former application allows the existence of multiple operating systems on the gadget. With OpeniBoot and Linux 2.6 kernel installed on your iPhone or iPod touch, users are offered a choice between the iPhone or Linux operating system when they boot the device.

Open source hardware 2008 - The definitive guide to open source hardware projects in 2008

What is open source hardware? Briefly, these are projects that creators have decided to completely publish all the source, schematics, firmware, software, bill of materials, parts list, drawings and "board" files to recreate the hardware - they also allow any use, including commercial. Similar to open source hardware like Linux, but hardware centric.

This is one of the new and emerging trends we've seen really take off over the last few years. Each year we do a guide to all open source hardware and this year there are over 60 projects/kits - it's incredible! Many are familiar with Arduino (now shipping over 60,000 units) but there are many other projects just as exciting and filled with amazing communities - we think we've captured nearly all of them in this list. Some of these projects and kits are available from MAKE others from the makers themselves or other hardware manufacturers - but since it's open source hardware you can make any of these yourself, everything is available.

You can also call this guide... "The Open source hardware gift guide - The one and only, 3rd annual celebration of open source hardware!" - we think these are some of the best things to consider for the holidays and it supports an exciting development in hardware design.

So sit back and get ready to scroll through the list! Here we go!

NASA partners with iTunes for Ares V heavy cargo rocket video updates

Trendwatch
By Rick C. Hodgin
Saturday, November 29, 2008 12:22

Huntsville (AL) - For the past 10 quarters, NASA has created videos which highlight advancements and achievements made on the Ares rocket program. Ares is the launch vehicle that will lift heavy cargo into orbit after the Space Shuttles are scheduled to retire in 2011. NASA announced on Wednesday that 5-15 minute videos are now available on iTunes.

Ares I and V heavy cargo launch vehicles

The Ares rocket is a traditional rocket-style vehicle. Unlike the Space Shuttle which looks like an airplane, the Ares rocket series is a much more powerful craft. It's currently scheduled to take man back to the Moon, and to explore Mars and possibly the rest of the solar system.

Image
Relative size of NASA launch vehicles. Left Saturn V rocket used in the original lunar missions. Second Space Shuttle. Third Ares I rocket. And right-most Ares V rocket, scheduled for service in 2015.

Previous launch videos have included the full spectrum of research from conception to the latest testing. Wind tunnel analysis of scale models of Ares I test vehicle (called Ares I-X) was shown. Also, a complete disassembly of the J-2X engine, called the "powerpack." This engine is really a complex system which, in a very high volume and controlled manner, spews pure liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen through jet nozzles for explosive propulsion.

Voices music from Final Fantasy Distant Worlds

Square-Enix responds to Final Fantasy XIII "betrayal"

By Frank Caron:

When Square-Enix announced that Final Fantasy XIII would be coming to the Xbox 360 in a simultaneous launch, many hardcore fans of the franchise considered it to be a "betrayal." At the heart of this fan-fueled hyperbole was the worry that the game would be diluted so that it would work on both consoles. Square-Enix has responded to these outcries, and has gone on the record to say that this is most certainly not the case.

Corporate Director Shinji Hashimoto and series Producer Yoshinori Kitase spoke with Kikizo about the fan complaints. "I'd rather they not think of this as a 'betrayal' or disappointment," Hashimoto explained. "It's not like we're canceling or delaying the PS3 version at all! It's more of an added bonus for 360 fans. We won't be putting them at a disadvantage in any way." Kitase added that "the PS3 version is what's in development right now, and the team is working to specialize that version to the very best of the PS3's abilities" and stated that there wouldn't be a "decrease in quality as a result of the game appearing across two platforms."

Given that Final Fantasy XIII was first announced for and already well into development on the PlayStation 3, it's not hard to believe the claims of Square-Enix. What was really disconcerting about the cross-platform decision was the evident delay to the North American PS3 version that stems from a simultaneous release as PS3 owners will have to wait for the Xbox 360 port. Either way the game is still a ways off. New details about the title and its release will be coming in the new year.

Spammer ordered to pay Facebook $873,277,200

Chicago (IL) – Facebook has won a big judgment against a major spammer, who flooded members of the social networking site with “unwanted and, sometimes, inappropriate marketing messages.” Atlantis Blue Capital, run by Adam Guerbuez, will have to pay more than $873 million in statutory and aggravated statutory damages.

Most sentences against spammers are not nearly high enough to have an impact on spamming operations. However, the latest case, filed by Facebook against Atlantis Blue Capital on August 14 of this year, is likely to put on company out of business. Federal Judge Jeremy Fogel awarded Facebook $873,277,200 in damages for accessing the company’s servers, setting up phishing websites to acquire Facebook logins and email addresses and sending more than 4 million emails to Facebook’s members.

AMD delays Fusion processor to 2011

Sunnyvale (CA) – In a rather unexpected announcement, AMD today said that it shelved the development of its 2010 Fusion with 45 nm Shrike core and decided to introduce the Fusion concept with the 2011 Llano CPU and a 32 nm core. AMD also announced five new processors including a quad-core notebook CPU and the "Orochi" desktop processor with “more than” four Bulldozer cores.

The presentation of AMD senior vice president Randy Allen and the company’s Financial Analyst Day today was centered around the manufacturer’s belief that “must win in the mainstream and value segments” as well as in “consumer and small and medium business segments.” Of course there was a lot of focus on today’s launch of the 45 nm Shanghai Opteron processor and Allen used the opportunity to side swipe Intel with the note that this is the “best server processor on the planet” (as opposed to Intel’s claim that Core i7 is the “fastest processor on the planet”), but the big news certainly came out of AMD’s desktop and mobile product roadmap.

Image

The 45 nm Fusion processor, initially promised as a 2009 chip and then moved into 2010 is essentially cancelled. The chip, which was described to combine a CPU and GPU under one hood in the “Shrike” core, was found to only bring modest improvements over today’s platforms in terms of power efficiency, cost and performance. Instead, the company will introduce Fusion (which actually isn’t called Fusion anymore) as a 2011 model in a 32 nm version with Llano core. Allen said that 32 nm would be the right technology to introduce the product. Llano will feature four cores, 4 MB of cache, DDR3 memory support and an integrated GPU.

The first 32 nm desktop processor from AMD will be the 2011 “Orochi”, a Bulldozer-core based CPU with more than four cores. Allen noted that AMD will be producing 32 nm processors in 2010, but the “wave of products” will appear in the 2011 timeframe – which suggests that AMD will not be able to close the manufacturing gap with Intel in that generation, if Intel is able to deliver 32 nm processors as planned in 2009.

The first 32 nm mobile processor from AMD will be “Ontario”, also built with integrated graphics following the original Fusion concept. The CPU will have two cores, 1 MB of cache and DDR3 memory support.

For 2009 and 2010, AMD will fill up its 45 nm product lines with the upcoming “Deneb” processor for the enthusiast desktop, which will be complemented with the “Propos”, a scaled down version for the mainstream desktop. AMD also announced four new mobile processors – two for the mainstream notebook and two for ultra-portables. “Caspian” will be AMD’s first 45 nm mobile processor and aim for mainstream notebooks. It will be replaced with “Champlain”, which offers DDR3 support, in 2010. For ultra-portables, AMD announced the 45 nm “Conesus” for 2009 and the 45 nm “Geneva” with DDR3 support for 2010. AMD did not announce new server/workstation products beyond the 6-core Istanbul and 8/12-core Magny-Cours and Sao Paulo CPUs that are scheduled for a 2009/2010 introduction.

USB 3.0 to Deliver a Tenfold Speed Increase

Fasten your seat belts — data transfer is going into overdrive.

The ubiquitous Universal Serial Bus, better known as USB, is on track to make its first major upgrade in eight years — a tenfold speed increase over the current USB 2.0 standard. That means we'll be able to rip music, video, photos from the vast array of peripherals we connect to our computers much more quickly, and it makes such up-and-coming devices as HD video cameras that much more practical.

USB 3.0 will also deliver greater power efficiency and the ability to recharge a wider variety of gadgets — and it will most likely mean the death of the competing standard known as FireWire.

To get a sense of the speed increase, consider this: Under USB 2.0 it takes about 10 minutes to transfer a high-def video from a Blu-ray disc. With USB 3.0, it will take just about a minute.

"What the user will see is really a much faster response time, less waiting, more productivity," says Patrick Moorhead, vice president of advanced marketing at AMD, one of the supporters of the USB 3.0 standard.

But none of this will happen tomorrow. The first USB 3.0 devices probably won't show up until the end of 2009 or early 2010, say analysts. Users can get a glimpse into future devices sporting SuperSpeed USB as early as the annual Consumer Electronics Show in January, and Wired.com will be there.

"The first places that you will see this show up is where you get the biggest benefits — HD video cameras and hard drives," says Moorhead.

Google Plannig to Shut Down Lively 3D World

Google announced that on December 31st they will shut down Lively, which was their 3D chat world, and somewhat of a potential competitor to Second Life. Room widgets embedded in other sites are then supposed to show an image but no more interaction, which would add Lively to the list of Google’s canceled products. Google’s post on this decision does not really give a detailed reasoning for this shut-down of a product which was just released this year, except that they’re saying “we want to ensure that we prioritize our resources and focus more on our core search, ads and apps business.” In particular, this leaves some questions unanswered as a company could theoretically embed ads in this 3D world app.

Lively was a great-looking Google product. On the other hand from the beginning on it was riddled with regular program crashes for some users, though the situation improved over time. There were other oddities as well, like a flood of sex rooms almost kidnapping the Lively rooms directory, or custom images never quite fitting the object you’d put them on (and then being disabled altogether for a while). It was still a fun experience, with a fresh and intuitive interface that I found more beginner-friendly than Second Life. Building rooms was entertaining and casual, with features like integrating YouTube videos by pasting the video URL, leading to quickly shareable results.

Now, Google say they’ve “always been supportive of this kind of experimentation because we believe it’s the best way to create groundbreaking products that make a difference to people’s lives” but that they’ve also “always accepted that when you take these kinds of risks not every bet is going to pay off.” Google apparently made up their mind that this bet will never pay off, even if the product was only given the chance to grow for 4 months; a short time to make a good judgment on potential future success. Others feel like Lively was an odd release for Google to begin with; Andy Baio in the forum comments, “I never understood this product. It never seemed to fit Google’s worldview, and even the standalone domain and branding were weird. I wonder what the story behind it was.”

Google says current users of Lively are supposed to make “videos and screenshots” of their “hard work” to preserve some of it. They also mention that current members of the Lively team will move to other projects. In 2006, Niniane Wang, who headed the then-secret project at Google, quoted from an email a colleague sent to their team:

i realized today during the meeting that...

- if we’re working on the best project at google, and
- we’re working at the best company on the planet, then

we’re working on the Best Project in the World
